Outdoor Research Skyward Jacket review. OnTheSnow reviewed this shell jacket as part of its 2016/2017 Jacket Buyers' Guide.

Favorite Features: A solid backcountry shell can dump heat when needed, however, a rock solid backcountry shell, see Outdoor Research’s Skyward, can do it in seconds. Thanks to pit zips that run the entire length of the torso, the Skyward can be worn like a poncho. The air-permeable fabric is both waterproof and fully seam sealed, making the Skyward a must for long ascents.

Room for Improvement: The bottom hem drawcords are tucked away, making it difficult to adjust with gloves on. We’d also like to see the addition of a powder skirt to fully realize this jacket’s potential.

Fit: The Skyward fit true to size and provided a standard fit. We found plenty of room through the trunk for additional layering.

Manufacturer Description: THAT SKIN TRACK ISN’T GOING TO SET ITSELF Sweating one minute and freezing the next is only fun when you’re jumping from a hot tub into the snow and back—not while you’re skiing. If the words “ski season” make you think about moving uphill as much as downhill, the Skyward Jacket speaks your language. Air-permeable AscentShell technology keeps you cool and dry while skinning up, and keeps the speed-generated windchill out after you peel off your skins and drop in for the descent.
